Chenda
The grand cylindrical drum — voice of Kerala's temple festivals and grandest processions. Struck on both faces to produce the thunderous rhythms of Melam traditions.

Preserving the Sacred Rhythms of Kerala
Our Foundation
Rooted in the ancient Taala traditions of Kerala, Rudraksham was founded to ensure that the transcendent art forms of temple percussion are not merely preserved — but transmitted with full scholarly and artistic rigour to every future generation. We do not teach instruments. We initiate students into a living lineage.
The Chenda is not an instrument. It is a voice given to the divine. Every strike is a prayer, every rhythm a scripture passed down through an unbroken lineage of masters who surrendered their lives to this art.
Sacred Instruments
The grand cylindrical drum — voice of Kerala's temple festivals and grandest processions. Struck on both faces to produce the thunderous rhythms of Melam traditions.
The sacred hourglass drum — companion to Sopanam singing and temple ritual. Its ethereal tones are inseparable from Kerala's devotional soundscape.
The double-reed wind instrument that announces and sanctifies sacred occasions. Its piercing call heralds every procession, every dawn ritual, every moment of divine worship.
Bronze cymbals that hold the tala — the rhythmic soul of every ensemble. The Ilathalam is the timekeeper of eternity, without which no Melam can begin or end.
The devotional step-song tradition — one of India's most ancient classical vocal forms. Sung on the sopanam, the temple steps, as an offering to the presiding deity.
Sacred verse compositions from Jayadeva's Gita Govinda, performed in the Sopanam tradition. Twenty-four ashtapadis that describe the divine romance of Radha and Krishna.
Performance Forms
Kerala's Melam traditions represent the apex of percussive art in the world. Built across centuries of rigorous transmission from master to student, these ensemble and solo forms reach heights of complexity, beauty, and spiritual power that are unparalleled in any living musical tradition. Rudraksham is one of the few institutions in the world that teaches all four forms in their complete depth.
Temple Percussion Ensemble
A grand percussion ensemble performed at temple festivals, building from serene beginnings to thunderous crescendo across five movements of rhythmic ascent. The most celebrated of all Kerala's percussion traditions.
Procession Ensemble
The classical percussion ensemble of Kerala's grand temple processions — distinguished by its powerful Chenda-led rhythmic architecture, ceremonial structure, and the profound devotional energy it generates.
Rhythmic Foundation
One of Kerala's most foundational tala forms. The Chembada provides the rhythmic backbone to Kathakali and the classical dance traditions of the region — the pulse beneath all movement and expression.
Solo Chenda Mastery
The pinnacle of Kerala's percussive arts — a solo performance form where a master percussionist displays ultimate command of the Chenda, improvising across hours in a state of spiritual surrender and artistic transcendence.

Every rupee you contribute keeps an ancient art form alive — in the hands of a new student, on the stage of a temple festival, and in the memory of Kerala.
For every patron who supports Rudraksham, a tree shall be planted in Kerala's forests — in honour of the tradition you have chosen to protect.
